Montgomery Brewster is a pitcher for the Hackensack Bulls, a Minor League Baseball team. After a bar fight following a game, he and his best friend Spike Nolan, the team's catcher, find themselves in jail. A man named J.B. Donaldo offers to cover their bail, provided they agree to plead guilty. Accepting the offer, they accompany Donaldo to New York City. There, at the Manhattan law office of Granville & Baxter, where Donaldo is employed, Brewster learns surprising news from executor Edward Roundfield. Brewster’s recently deceased great-uncle, Rupert Horn—whom Brewster had never met—has left him an inheritance of $300 million. However, the fortune comes with specific conditions.
