Harvey Cheyne, the privileged son of prominent American businessman Frank Burton Cheyne, faces challenges that stem from his upbringing and behavior. Isolated and ostracized by his peers at an elite boarding school, Harvey's misconduct leads to his suspension. In an effort to bridge the emotional distance between them, Frank decides to take his son on a trans-Atlantic business trip to Europe aboard a steamship.

However, the journey takes an unexpected turn when Harvey falls overboard in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. His life is saved by Manuel Fidello, a fisherman who pulls him from the perilous waters. Harvey is subsequently brought aboard the fishing schooner We're Here, a vessel hailing from Gloucester, Massachusetts. This incident marks the beginning of a transformative experience for Harvey, one that will challenge his character and reshape his perspective on life.
