Detective Mark McPherson of the New York City Police Department is tasked with unraveling the mystery behind the brutal murder of Laura Hunt, a young and accomplished advertising executive. Laura was found dead from a shotgun blast to the face, just inside the doorway of her apartment.

As part of his investigation, McPherson conducts an interview with Waldo Lydecker, a prominent and flamboyant newspaper columnist. Lydecker, an older man with an air of authority and refinement, recounts his relationship with Laura. He describes how their paths crossed and how he became a significant figure in her life. Acting as her mentor, Lydecker used his influence and connections to propel Laura's career forward. Despite their close companionship, their relationship remained platonic, though it is evident that Lydecker harbored deeper feelings for her.

Through this initial interview, McPherson begins to piece together the dynamics of Laura's life and relationships, setting the stage for uncovering the truth behind her untimely death.
