Johnny Vanning, a powerful figure in New York's criminal underworld, takes control of a flashy nightspot, renaming it "Club Intimate." Under his ownership, the club becomes a hub for illicit activities, with its female employees—Mary, Gabby, Emmy Lou, Florrie, and Estelle—bearing the brunt of his manipulative and abusive tactics. Vanning ensures their compliance through coercion and fear, exploiting them to further his own agenda.
One of the bar girls, Mary, is tasked with luring unsuspecting patrons into gambling beyond their means. One evening, she persuades a man to place bets until he accrues a debt he cannot repay. On their way home, the man confesses his financial predicament to her, believing the situation to be little more than a harmless misstep. However, Mary warns him of the grave danger he faces under Vanning’s regime and urges him to flee the city. Her fears are soon confirmed when she learns that the man has been murdered by Vanning’s enforcers.
Determined to bring Vanning to justice, District Attorney David Graham builds what he believes to be a strong case against the crime boss. Mary agrees to testify, providing crucial evidence about Vanning’s operations. However, during the trial, Vanning’s influence becomes apparent as he presents an unshakeable alibi and orchestrates an attack on Mary’s credibility. The jury ultimately acquits Vanning and his associates.
Disillusioned by the outcome, Graham accuses Mary of dishonesty, further isolating her. Realizing the danger she now faces from Vanning’s retaliation, Mary decides to leave town, her testimony having failed to bring justice while placing her life in jeopardy.
