The year is 2054, and Mickey Barnes finds himself in dire straits alongside his friend, Timo. Seeking escape and survival, the two sign up as crew members aboard a spaceship destined to colonize the distant planet Niflheim.

Timo's skills earn him a position as a shuttle pilot, while Mickey is assigned the grim and controversial role of the ship's sole "Expendable." This position relies on Earth-banned cloning technology, allowing Mickey to be regenerated with his memories intact after fatal missions.
