Father Andrew Kiernan, a Jesuit priest with a background in science, is tasked with investigating miraculous phenomena. In the Brazilian village of Belo Quinto, he examines a statue of the Virgin Mary reportedly weeping blood during the funeral of Father Paulo Alameida, a priest who had previously exhibited signs of stigmata. While Father Andrew meticulously gathers evidence to validate the occurrence, a young boy discreetly takes a rosary from Father Paulo's hand. This rosary is later sold in a marketplace to a woman, who subsequently sends it to her daughter, Frankie Paige, residing in Pittsburgh.
