In 1936, in the Bang Kapi district on the outskirts of Bangkok, Kwan and Riam were the children of rival village leaders. Their love, forbidden by circumstance, had to remain hidden from the world. They met in secret and eventually pledged their devotion to one another at a spirit shrine. However, Riam was later sold to Lady Thongkum, a noblewoman who treated her as if she were her own daughter. Lady Thongkum even arranged for Riam to meet a wealthy nobleman named Somchai. Despite Kwan's persistent efforts to reunite with Riam, his attempts were in vain, leading to a tragic conclusion at the spirit shrine.
