In the midst of World War II, a West Virginian mother endures the emotional toll of waiting for updates on her two sons serving overseas. Simultaneously, in 1940s Philadelphia, Lena and Abram, childhood friends navigating the complexities of their interracial and interfaith relationship, face societal challenges. Lena, a young black woman, and Abram, a Jewish man, find their connection tested as Abram prepares to deploy. Before leaving, Abram assures Lena's mother of his honorable intentions, promising to return after the war to formally court Lena.
Tragically, Abram's life is cut short when he is killed in action as a fighter pilot. His death leaves Lena devastated but resolute. Determined to honor his memory and contribute to the war effort, she decides to enlist after graduating, channeling her grief into a commitment to serve.
