Holly Golightly, having just dismissed a date from the previous night, makes her way to the Tiffany & Co. flagship store. However, her date unexpectedly tracks her down at her apartment building. Unable to locate her keys, Holly contacts her landlord, Mr. Yunioshi, to gain entry. As she prepares to head out for her regular visit to the imprisoned mobster Sally Tomato, she encounters her new neighbor, Paul Varjak. Holly also meets Paul's affluent older acquaintance, Emily Eustace Failenson, whom he affectionately refers to as "2E." Later that evening, while trying to escape from an overly persistent suitor, Holly finds herself on the fire escape and witnesses 2E giving Paul money and sharing a kiss before departing.
